BESAKIH THE MOTHER TEMPLE IN BALI  is actually a complex made up twenty-two temples that sit on parallel ridges. it has stepped terraces and flights of stairs which ascend to a number of courtyards and brick gateways that in turn lead up to the main spire or menu structure, which is called PURA PENATARAN AGUNG. All this is aligned a long a single axis and designed to lead the spiritual person upward and closer to the mountain which is considered sacred.

TIRTHA GANGGA literrally means water from the GANGES it is a site of some reverence for the Hindu Balinese. Strictly, the name refers to the water palace built here from the late 1940's to the 1950's by Gusti Gede Djelantik, heir to the former kingdom of Karangasem. It is widely used, tough, to refer to the general area which includes the water palace and some particularly stunning rural areas around.

                                                                                                                                                                              Until 1926 Ulun Danu Temple and the village of Batur were located down in the caldera, at the foot of the Batur volcano.After the volcano erupted violently in 1926, both the village and the temple were destroyed except for the most important shrine, an 1-tiered menu dedicated to Dewi Ulun Danu. The villagers moved to the highest and oldest rim of caldera where they rebuilt their village and the temple.
